British Airways cancels more summer flights

LONDON (Agencies): British Airways is cancelling another 650 flights from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airport this month as it struggles to cope with increased demand and continued staff shortages.

The UK airline has asked slot authorities to cut 105,000 seats from its July capacity at the two London airports – BA wants to drop 76,000 seats from Heathrow and 29,400 at Gatwick.

The cuts to flights are mostly to European leisure-orientated destinations such as Greece, Spain and Portugal.

A British Airways spokesperson said: “We took pre-emptive action earlier this year to reduce our summer schedule to provide customers with as much notice as possible about any changes to their travel plans.

“As the entire aviation industry continues to face into the most challenging period in its history, regrettably it has become necessary to make some further reductions. We’re in touch with customers to apologise and offer to rebook them or issue a full refund.”

Last month, the UK government offered a one-off “amnesty” to airlines on the usual airport slots rules to encourage carriers to operate “realistic” summer schedules in an attempt to minimise disruption at airports.
