NEW YORK: The first edition of British Author J.K. Rowling most popular novel, “Harry Potter”, sold for US$471,000 in the United States, the auction house’s organizers said that this is the world record price for the sale of fiction written in the 20th century.
The 1997 British edition of the novel, titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, was described by Heritage Auctions as “magical, incredibly bright and very pristine.”
Prices at previous auctions for the first edition of Harry Potter ranged from about $110,000 to $138,000.
The novel was published in the United States as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerers’ Stone”. That was six times more than the 70,000 estimate.
According to the Dallas-based auction house said only 500 copies of the edition were printed with specific binding, with a final price six times higher than the pre-sale estimate of $70,000.
“This is not only the most expensive Harry Potter book ever, but also the most expensive commercial book sold in the 20th century,” said Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions.
