It’s now officially the fall season! Yet with the crisp air, pumpkin spice lattes, and apple pie comes one less desirable component of the colder weather: flu season. The CDC reported that between Oct. 1, 2019, and Apr. 4, 2020, the United States saw up to 56 million illnesses from the flu. Not to mention, COVID-19 variants are continuing to arise and thousands of new cases are diagnosed daily.
So, in order to do our best to stay healthy as the weather begins to turn, the key is to keep your immune system as strong as possible. That’s why we consulted with Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CEO of NY Nutrition Group and member of our medical expert board, to determine the best food to start your day with to boost your overall immunity.
Even though eating one particular food won’t necessarily directly impact your immune system, there are certain nutrient-dense foods that can help to protect against illness and infection. According to Moskovitz, incorporating avocados into your breakfast can help to boost your immunity.
“Avocados offer a winning combination of inflammation-fighting antioxidants, vitamin C that helps with immune cell migration, and B-vitamins that play a role in normal immune system function,” says Moskovitz.
These are the vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to fight off flu season and continue to protect us against COVID-19, and its variants.
As if that wasn’t enough, Moskovitz points out that “this creamy green superfood is also a great source of monounsaturated fats, which increase the absorption of immune-balancing vitamin D and support a healthy heart, brain, and metabolism.”
So, not only do avocados give your immune system the boost it needs to keep you healthy, but the benefits also reach your essential organs, too.
If you’re looking for ways to start incorporating avocados into your breakfast routine, we’ve got you covered. Because this green fruit is so versatile, it can be enjoyed with countless sweet and savory recipes. Of course, you can stick with a classic Avocado Toast recipe, but it could be fun to mix it up by trying an Avocado-Berry Smoothie or even this fiber-filled Breakfast Burrito.
