Finland has been named the happiest country in the world for the fifth year in a row in the annual ranking of the world’s happiest countries.

The UN-sponsored index ranked Bahrain as the happiest country in the Gulf region, with the tiny kingdom ranking in 21st place globally. In the UAE, people are also relatively happy, with the emirates moving up to 24th position.

At the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan remained in last position as the unhappiest country, followed closely by Lebanon. The latest rankings were compiled before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“The World Happiness Report 2022 reveals a bright light in dark times … As we battle the ills of disease and war, it is essential to remember the universal desire for happiness and the capacity of individuals to rally to each other’s support in times of great need,” states the report.

Nordic nations once again dominated the top spots — with Denmark in second place and Iceland in third.
